Argentina’s largest city – and its capital – is a melting pot of European, South American and Asian cultures, which is reflected in its cuisine, its energy and its main tourist attractions. From football to tango, theatre to colonial architecture, fabulous food and great museums make Buenos Aires one of the most energetic and exciting in the southern hemisphere.

Buenos Aires Art Museums

Buenos Aires is renowned for its vibrant cultural life and its support of the arts. The city’s latest gallery is the Latin American Art Museum, located in an intriguing set of interlocking cubes features modern work by artists from across the continent, and also shows films and visual arts. Also unmissable is the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, featuring permanent work by local and international artists. Sculpture fans will love the Floralis Generica, a gigantic aluminium and steel flower set in the middle of Plaza de las Naciones Unidas. The giant petals even close at night.

Plaza de Mayo

The site of Argentina’s first political rally in 1890, Plaza de Mayo is the city’s oldest square and the meeting point for celebrations and demonstrations. The striking white obelisk, Piramide de Mayo is at its centre, celebrating the first anniversary of independence from Spain. Surrounded by notable buildings, such as the Casa Rosada, the Cabioldo and Buenos Aires’ main cathedral.

El Caminito

Located in the predominantly Italian neighbourhood of El Boca, the pedestrian street museum of El Caminito is undeniably a tourist trap but it’s also Buenos Aires’ most vibrant district. Attracting artists, musicians, dancers and other creatives, the houses here are basically corrugated zinc-covered shacks, painted in vibrant colours left over from Genoese port workers. El Caminito is named after a 1926 tango song. Wander along the street and enjoy the tango demonstrations crafts and souvenirs as well as the Museum of Decorative Arts of Quniquela Martin.

Buenos Aires Tango

Argentina is the home of tango, with Buenos Aires the unofficial capital of this incredible dance form. There are impromptu tango dances on streets throughout the city, and you can see top professionals on stage at the Centro Cultural Torquato Tasso. This is also the venue for fusion of rock and tango.

Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace)

Taking pride of place on the celebrated Plaza de Mayo, Casa Rosada is the Presidential Palace and seat of the Argentinian government. It has also seen such iconic figures as Juan and Eva Peron address the crowds from the balconies during the 40s and 50s. Behind the palace is the highly recommended Casa Rosada Museum.

Teatro Colon

The Teatro Colon opera house is a marvel. Located at Ceritto 628, Teatro Colon has played host to world-class opera, ballet and classical music since 1908. Pavarotti, Caruso and Callas among other greats have played here. Join a guided tour to find out more about the history of this iconic Buenos Aires concert hall.

La Bombonera

Maradona’ (hand of God’s) spiritual home, La Bombonera is home to the famous Boca Juniors. Book well in advance for tickets via an agent – match days are a riot of colour (yellow and blue) and noise in the streets around La Bombonera. You can also see the stadium with a visit to the Museo de La Pasión Boquense.
