São Paulo Cathedral – Catedral da Sé

More than 800 tonnes of rare Italian marble were used to create this Neo-Gothic and Renaissance-style cathedral located in São Paulo’s main square. The stunning dome was designed by German Maximilian Emil Hehl, who took inspiration from Florence Cathedral in Italy. The crypt is especially striking and filed with the tombs of many Christian notables, with a backdrop of marble carvings. The Balbiani and Rossi-designed organ was built in 1954 and boasts 12,000 pipes and five keyboards.

Mercado Municipal

Named after the neighbourhood in which it resides, Mercado Market on Rua da Cantareira is the best-known and largest food market in São Paulo. A popular meeting place for locals and tourists, this massive space of columns, stained glass panels and vaulted ceilings has traders purveying all kinds of local foodstuffs. Head upstairs to the restaurant area and try one of São Paulo’s savoury specialities – the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich.

São Paulo Parks

In a city of some 12 million, escaping and recharging from the madding crowd is essential. São Paulo has several beautiful nature sanctuaries: Parque Villa Lobos is located alongside the River Pinheiros in the west of the city and was formerly a rubbish tip. Now completely transformed it has running and walking trails and 37,000 trees. Visitors will also find tennis and street basketball courts, alongside grass football pitches. Ibirapuera Park on Av. Pedro Álvares Cabral is an older park with museums, lakes and several cultural pavilions, including the enigmatic Japanese Pavilion. The Park is also home to the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Afro-Brasil Museum.

Art Museums

Steeped in art and culture, São Paulo has excellent museums: Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) astride its four red concrete pillars is the city’s flagship museum and has more than 10,000 works from across the world. The Pinacoteca do Estado, located in Downtown Jardim da Luz is São Paulo’s oldest museum and contains a wide selection of Brazilian art. The stunning Museu Afro Brasil is dedicated to Brazil’s indigenous art with a focus on Afro-Brazilian and African works.

Edifico Italia

There’s no better place in São Paulo for jaw-dropping views of this sprawling metropolis. Located in the Republica district, this 46-storey skyscraper is 165m tall and has a rooftop observation deck and Terraço Itália restaurant and bar. Entrance is free Monday to Fridays between 3 and 4pm. Grab a cocktail and watch the sun go down while enjoying 360-degree views of São Paulo.

Football museum at Pacaembu Stadion

An immersive multi-media history of Brazilian football with two floors of exhibits including a focus worldwide heroes such as Pelé, Rivelino and Milton Santos. Measure the speed of your kick and take a walk around this iconic stadium. Outside the stadium you’ll find food trucks serving traditional Brazilian snacks.
