Shanghai, China’s largest city and its commercial and financial powerhouse, may boast the world’s tallest skyscraper but its ancient heart still beats loudly. The city’s architectural heritage is fascinating, from Art Deco masterpieces to synagogues and cathedrals to traditional temples and gardens. Shopping in Shanghai is world-class with designer brands alongside local crafts, and the entertainment scene is world-class.

The Bund

One of Shanghai’s most recognisable attractions, The Bund is a mile-long stretch of waterfront beside the Huangpu River which showcases 52 of Shanghai’s most impressive colonial buildings encompassing Baroque, Neo-Classical and Gothic styles. Allow at least a couple of hours to meander along this promenade of living history. Begin at Broadway Mansions, cross over the Waibaidu Bridge and continue until you reach the Meteorogical Signal Tower.

Huangpu River Cruise

A superb vantage point to see the historic Bund quarter, join a Huangpu River Cruise. Choose from a quick 30-minute taster to a full 3.5 hours and take in the wonderful views of Shanghai. At night the view of the city is especially magical or just before sunset to capture the ‘magic hour’.

Shanghai Tower

China’s tallest building, the Shanghai Tower stands a proud 632m with 127 floors above ground and five basement levels, replete with offices, high-end retail and five-star hotels. Begin your visit at the exhibition floor on B1, then take the express lift directly to the 115th floor Shanghai Tower Observation Deck and enjoy panoramic views over the city.

Jade Buddha Temple

Head to Anyuan Road, Putuo District to see this extraordinary example of Chinese Buddhist religious art. The temple was built to house two jade statues: the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbant Buddha, both carved from beautiful white jade. A place of quiet contemplation away from the hectic city, take Metro Line 3 and alight at Jiangning Road Station.

Shanghai Natural History Museum

Spread out on four levels, this relatively new museum boasts animatronic dinosaurs amongst the stuffed exhibits and theatre experiences that detail human life in China from the Big Bang to today’s modern developments. Part Guggenheim, part Natural History Museum allow at least 3 hours to see it all. There are also two cafes and a sculpture park.

Yu Garden

Yu Garden or Yuyuan Garden (meaning ‘happiness’ in Chinese) is a haven of peace located in the northeast section of Old Shanghai. Adjacent the City God Temple, this 400-year-old garden was constructed during the Ming Dynasty. It’s divided up into six distinct areas comprising classical Chinese architecture, beautiful sculptures (the exquisite Jade Rock is a must) as well as the Yuyuan market.

Nanjing Road Shopping

Originally known as Parker Lane, pedestrianised Nanjing Road is Shanghai’s premier shopping district dating back more than a century. Start at Xizang Middle Road in the west and make your way down to He’nan Middle Road in the east. If the heat and crowds are overwhelming, stop for lunch in one of the many cafes and restaurants. Or rest your legs on the little train that shuttles visitors from one end of the road to the other. Famous shops here include the Number 1 Department Store and the Hualian Department Store, as well as high end stores.
