Gran Canaria is the third largest island in the Canaries and a superb year-round holiday destination. This Spanish volcanic island off northwestern Africa is a fantastic destination for nature lovers as well as those seeking a regular beach holiday.

Las Palmas

Gran Canaria’s capital, Las Palmas is a buzzing metropolis and the island’s main commercial centre and main resort. The old town area of Vegueta features much colonial architecture dating from the 15th century. The Gothic splendour of Santa Ana Cathedral is worth a visit, as is the museum of the Canary Islands which focuses on the pre-hispanic culture of the island. The main beach here is the Playa de las Canteras – a two-mile stretch of sand lined with restaurants.

Stargazing in Gran Canaria

Thanks to almost-zero light pollution and the Canaries’ equatorial location, Gran Canaria offers visitors some of the best star gazing in Europe. You’ll see constellations of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres here from the Temisas Astronomical Observatory and the Roque Saucillo Astronomy Centre just 21km from Las Palmas.

Mirador Pico de Bandama

Hiking around the rim of the largest remaining volcanic crater in Gran Canaria is a must on your visit to the island. At 1,867ft above sea level, this immense caldera is 700ft deep and about 1km wide. You can actually walk down into the bowl of the crater in about half an hour. And there are amazing views across the island and Las Palmas.

Scuba Dive in Gran Canaria

Blessed with an astonishing variety of biodiversity, Gran Canaria is a diver’s paradise with the chance to see an array of marine life. From manta rays and rare fish at El Cabron Marine Reserve, to submerged wrecks at Puerto Mogan, or even a deep cave dive at La Catedral in Las Palmas, there’s a variety of dives to suit all levels of experience. Best of all, the water in Gran Canaria remains around 23°C all year round.

Casa de Colon

Located in the La Vegueta district of Las Palmas, Christopher Columbus’s former house is a fascinating museum that gives visitors a window into life in colonial-era Spain, with paintings and artefacts. Constructed in typical colonial style, the rooms all face the courtyard with breezy balconies on the upper stories.
