Rome, Italy’s capital and home to the Vatican City. Blessed with a fascinating past, Rome is a vibrant museum of living history with its ancient ruins and iconic monuments such as the Trevi Fountain and St Peter’s Basilica.

The Colosseum

Rome’s Colosseum is the iconic symbol of the Italian capital and has stood on this site since AD 80. Created by Emperor Vespasian, this extraordinary amphitheatre held up to 50,000 cheering spectators who enjoyed the violent games, festivals and regal celebrations – all watched over by the Imperial Court. Buy your ticket online to avoid the lengthy queues and hire a guide to lead you over Rome’s best preserved antiquity. Next to the amphitheatre is the fabled Arch of Constantine erected by the Roman Senate.

Trevi Fountain

This magnificent 17th-century fountain with impressive statues was built between 1732 and 1751 under the orders of Pope Clement XII. Superstition has it that if you throw a few coins into the fountain it will bring you good luck.

Piazza Navona

This stunning Baroque square designed by Borromini is a favourite of tourists and locals, and is a delight in any season with its fountains and churches. The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi fountain in the centre of the square represents the world’s most iconic rivers: Ganges, Nile, Danube and Rio de la Plata. A short walk from here is the church of San Luigi dei Francesi which is home to three paintings by Caravaggio.

The Pantheon

An astonishing monument, the Pantheon is 2000 years old. Its spectacular 43m-dome seems suspended in air while its 9m-entrance is the only source of light for the building. Once a Pagan temple, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 609 by Pope Boniface IV after which it became a fashionable resting place for Italian royalty, as well as artists such as Raphael.

Sistine Chapel and Vatican City

Michelangelo’s frescoes masterpiece is a must-see on your visit to Rome. Buy a pass for the Vatican online and avoid the queues. The Vatican itself is a separate walled city within Rome with the Pope its leader as head of the Roman Catholic Church. Stroll around the gardens, visit the incomparable St Peter’s Basilica as well as St Peter’s Square where the faithful gather for the Pope’s address.
