Australia’s most isolated city, and the capital of Western Australia, Perth is a vibrant metropolis with many attractions. From world-class beaches, botanical gardens, an eclectic restaurant and café scene as well as a rich cultural life, Perth is a magical destination. Here are six reasons to visit Perth.

Swan River Cruise and Wineries

Australia provides the world with some of the very best wines, and the Swan Valley Wineries are no exception. Hire a car, or take a boat ride up the Swan River and explore one of the many wineries. There’s wine and chocolate tasting on offer at Coward & Black, Tyler’s Vineyard’s focus is on Grenache, while Olive Farm Wines have an irresistible cheese café adjoining the winery, or stop for lunch at the acclaimed Sandalford Winery before heading back to Perth by boat.

Rottnest Island

A protected nature reserve, this small island just off the coast of Perth makes a great day trip and is most well-known for being home to the quokka, a rodent-like marsupial. There are beaches and coves to explore, fishing and surfing spots and regular guided tours. Visitors can also stay overnight at one of the campsites or hotels and there are several good bars and restaurants.

Kings Park and Botanic Gardens

Popular with locals and tourists, Kings Park and Botanic Gardens is located in the centre of Perth yet is a haven of peace from the buzz of the city. Walk among the treetops on the Federation walkway, take your children to the interactive Rio Tinto Naturescape or enjoy a summer concert. The botanic garden is part of King’s Park and has more than 70 bird species as well as abundant native flora and fauna. Climb the winding DNA tower for superb views over the surrounding area.

Perth’s best beaches

Perth is blessed with so many white-sand beaches, you’d need months to explore them all. Top of the best beach league is Cottesloe, just a 20-minute drive from the centre of Perth. The shimmering aquamarine water against soft blonde sand and pine tree backdrop is idyllic. The surf is good, and it is lifeguard patrolled. Snorkel fans will love Mettams Pool, with its octopus and colourful fish, while the more vibrant Bathers Beach has its own liquor licence. Leighton Beach is 1.5km stretch of blinding white sand, and City Beach (closest to Perth centre) offers visitors powerful waves and a good selection of bars and restaurants.

Pinnacles National Park

Just a two-hour drive out of Perth near the coastal town of Cervantes, visitors enter another world at the enigmatic Pinnacles National Park. Thousands of limestone spires have been formed over millions of years and stand sentinel in the sands. Hire a car and follow the Indian Ocean Drive or join a guided tour.

Fremantle Markets

Fremantle lies 35-minutes south of Perth and has long been considered the capital’s hippy neighbour. It’s a beautiful coastal town with a village-like atmosphere, and renowned for its vibrant cultural life and laid-back vibe. Fremantle Markets has been serving locals since 1897 and now boasts 150 stalls selling fresh produce, clothes, souvenirs, coffee and much more. It’s located at the southern end of Fremantle’s ‘Cappuccino Strip’ on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street.
