Wellington is New Zealand’s capital, located on the North Island and nestled between the Rimutaka mountain range and the harbour at Cook Strait. It offers visitors a world-class café and restaurant culture, superb vineyards to explore, a vibrant arts scene and is the location for many scenes from Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit movies.

Here are 7 reasons to book your private jet charter to Wellington:

Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria is a 643ft-hill to the east of the centre of Wellington and was just one of many Wellington locations that featured in the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s a popular hangout in all seasons, especially with families. Access is via bus or car via Alexandra Road and the 360-degree views of Wellington, the harbour and the ocean to the south are unmissable.

Wellington Farmers’ Markets

Wellington has numerous markets selling fresh produce and crafts. The capital’s oldest market is Harbourside Market, located on the waterfront and open every Sunday for fine local cuisine, coffee and street entertainment. Wellington’s Underground Market is especially geared to showcasing emerging designers, makers, bakers and crafters. Every Saturday, Thorndon Farmers’ Market takes centre stage while Wellington’s Night Market, off Cuba Street every Friday and Saturday night, is a fun way to start the weekend.

Maori Village of Te Aro Pa

Right in the centre of Wellington in Taranaki Street you’ll find the remains of Te Aro Pa. This Maori village was excavated in 2005 and is the only 1840s Maori site in the city. It contains preserved foundations of two whare ponga (buldings).

Petone Settlers Museum

The museum celebrates and commemorates the first organised European settler landings (1840) in New Zealand and is located on the harbour in the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial (also a bathing pavilion). Although small, the museum has an eclectic range of exhibits about the first arrivals – including a replica ship’s cabin – as well as historical artefacts on the previous industry in the area, including the Unilever soap factory.

Museum of New Zealand

New Zealand’s geology and natural environment, and the stories of New Zealand’s indigenous people, the Maori, are celebrated in Te Papa’s permanent exhibitions. An exciting range of exhibitions display New Zealand’s diverse art and visual culture.

Wellington Botanic Garden

Located near central Wellington, on the side of the hill between Thorndon and Kelburn, Wellington Botanic Garden is a 25-hectare natural haven. Enjoy the protected native forest, conifers, floral displays, and special plant collections with superb views over the city. Access is by road and also via the Wellington cable car. The station is at Cable Car Lane, off Lambton Quay and the cars leave every 10 minutes to reach the Botanic Garden.

Day trip to Wairarapa

One of New Zealand’s premier food and wine destinations, Wairarapa is at the heart of the country’s famous Classic Wine Trail. Discover luxury retreats, boutique vineyards, award-winning restaurants and authentic retail experiences around the towns of Martinborough, Featherston, Greytown, Carterton and Masterton. Located just one hour north of Wellington, the area is reachable by car or train.
