Chapman Freeborn coordinates urgent air charters in response to Libyan petrochemical incident

12th September 2008

Chapman Freeborn Airchartering has coordinated the movement of over 250 tons of fire fighting foam from Europe to Benghazi, Libya, to help tackle a blaze at a petrochemical and refining complex.

The urgent flights were chartered by Oil Spill Response and East Asia Response Ltd (OSRL EARL) in reaction to a fire in a 450,000 barrel oil-storage tank at the Ras Lanuf plant.

With steps already taken to isolate the incident from other tanks at the facility, a large supply of fire fighting foam was required to suppress the combustion.

Chapman Freeborn's UK office coordinated a total of six flights to Libya, using DC10-30F aircraft to carry around 45,000kgs of retardant per rotation.

Four flights departed to Benghazi (BEN) from Doncaster Sheffield (DSA) in the UK, and a further two flights were routed from Paris Vatry (XCR) and Barcelona (BCN).

Chapman Freeborn representatives were present at the airports to help oversee the x-ray, loading and timely dispatch of the cargo.

Daniel Carriett, who managed the Chapman Freeborn operation on behalf of OSRL EARL said:

"Chapman Freeborn works very closely with OSRL EARL in order that we are fully prepared to assist them when required.

"While incidents like this are thankfully rare, the principle of moving cargo as quickly and smoothly as possible is one we also apply on a daily basis for our freight forwarder clients."
