Chapman Freeborn Provides Timely Crisis Response To Clients In Need Over Christmas
3rd January 2007
AOG Response
Just to prove that Chapman Freeborn truly are operational 24 / 7 / 365, our London office received a call for assistance just prior to Christmas from a major maintenance organization based in Switzerland to urgently move a replacement PW4000 engine for an AOG Airbus A330 which was stranded in Martinique.
Naturally, speed was of the essence with hundreds of passengers delayed in both Europe and Fort de France wishing to spend Christmas with their friends and family. Our Cargo Duty Officer, Olga Kovalova offered a speedy and competitive solution to the request on an Ilyushin IL76 and the replacement engine was in the air within hours and delivered on Christmas Eve. The same IL76 then brought the damaged engine back to Zurich for repair on 26th December after the crew had rested on Christmas Day in Martinique (it’s not all bad for standby crew)!
The engine manufacturer and the airline involved were both very relieved by our expedient response and as such, the client sent an immediate letter of thanks praising our"outstanding" support.

Providing & Supporting Vital Relief Operations in Crisis Zone
In addition, we are perhaps most well known for our work with the humanitarian aid and relief community. Since 22nd December, we have had an ongoing operation for the World Food Programme operating an AN12 from Nairobi into Northern Kenya and Somalia transporting vital flood relief and medical supplies as well as aviation fuel. On Christmas Day, the media widely reported heightened conflict in the country which led to many local aid flights being forced to stop for reasons of safety.
However, we kept our AN12 flying, this time to Waajir in northern Kenya with aviation fuel supplies, supporting WFP’s Mi8 helicopters so that they could continue to drop the desperately needed aid supplies to the flood and conflict-affected region.
The wider operation into Somalia will once again resume when the safety of UN aircraft will be guaranteed by parties in the conflict. In the meantime, the AN12 will keep flying for our aid clients.
