Chapman Freeborn Ostende never"tyres" of difficult cargo flights!
4th September 2006
In August, Chapman Freeborn’s Ostende office got a very unusual request
from a Belgian freight forwarder to transport some super-huge construction
vehicle tyres from the Ukraine to Tucson, Arizona, USA.
The 24 tyres were each an astonishing 358cm in diameter and pretty heavy so the obvious solution was the Antonov 124. The client’s initial concerns were that they had no local representation in the cargo’s point of origin but we were quickly able to provide reassurance by guaranteeing a Chapman Freeborn representative in Ukraine to oversee the loading and customs formalities.
There were further difficulties when the client could not deliver the cargo on time owing to difficulties in arranging the exceptional road transport needed to transport the tyres from the factory to the departure airport at Gostomel. As the traffic rights for the flight to the USA were already in place and the aircraft was prepared and available to make the flight, we repositioned the aircraft to Dnepropetrovsk Airport which was closer to the factory to solve the problem.
And when it came to finding a representative, someone remembered CF Frankfurt’s Martin Ziegler who was on vacation in the Ukraine, so he stayed a couple of extra days and positioned on the Antonov 124 from Kiev to supervise the loading and departure from Dnepropetrovsk which all went without a hitch.
The flight was a complete success, the client was delighted with our proactive response to find solutions to the problems that arose and once more, Chapman Freeborn proved our dedication and the fact that we are not easily deflated in the face of adversity!
