Chapman Freeborn Baghdad: Our Newest"Self-Contained" Operation!

12th May 2005

The Chapman Freeborn Airchartering international network of offices has long been booking charters for various passenger and cargo clients into Baghdad International Airport, so it was logical to open a Station Management operation there to provide vital on-the-spot support for these flights.

October 2004 saw our Station Manager, Gary Matthews strike up a base at the airport and much like Tom Hanks’ character in the Hollywood blockbuster movie,â??The Terminal’, the Airport has been his literal home ever since! As it is probably one of the most secure places in the still troubled city, Gary has made his home in a cosy container on the Airport! Gary is ably supported by his colleagues Enas, Sarah and Marwan.

Gary comments:"Meeting the many passenger and cargo flights operating here, we ensure that the movement of goods, people and aircraft is as efficient and smooth as possible.

"It is fascinating to watch the airport develop and satisfying for the locally recruited team to be a part of it. They are very capable and approach each day with a friendly gusto and enjoy their responsibilities, while living under difficult circumstances, to say the least."

Group Director Russi Batliwala comments:"Life is not terribly exciting for Gary, living in a container as he does, but he certainly makes the best of it and lets his hair down every few weeks in Dubai and back home in Europe! On a serious note, Gary and his team form a vital link in the chain of our growing international operations through Baghdad."
