Chapman Freeborn flies first civilian jet into Baghdad after the war,
bringing Iraqi POWs home from Iran
8th May 2003
Chapman Freeborn was extremely proud to charter the aircraft that turned
out to be the first civilian jet into Baghdad after the end of the recent
war.
The Boeing 737-200 pictured below was chartered by the International Committee
of the Red Cross (ICRC) in order to repatriate 59 Iraqi prisoners of war
from Iran – some fifteen years after the end of the Iran – Iraq
war.
This
came about following negotiations between the ICRC and the Iranian authorities. These resulted in the release and the passengers travelled on board the
specially chartered aircraft from Tehran – Baghdad along with a doctor,
a nurse and ICRC representatives.
Arrangements were made by the ICRC to reunite the returnees with their
families in Iraq. Since the Iran / Iraq war began in 1980, the ICRC
has supervised the repatriation of almost 97,000 prisoners of war on both
sides. Chapman Freeborn has provided charter aircraft to them before
and Darren Banham from Chapman Freeborn’s London office said that
he was really pleased to be of assistance once more to ICRC and support
the commendable work that they do.
